Laser Hair Removal Side Effects and Prevention Tips

Technology has paved the way for more effective hair removal results and laser hair removal methods have become a very effective procedure. Even though it cannot yet be considered the most affordable option, a lot of people opt for this method because of its guaranteed results.
Before deciding to have this type of procedure performed, it is wise to learn about the potential for laser hair removal side effects. Note that not everyone suffers from laser hair removal side effects — most people don’t have any problems at — all but when side effects do occur they can vastly differ from one person to another. It really depends on how person’s body reacts with the treatment.

Here are a few of the most common side effects that some people encounter after receiving laser hair removal treatment:
  1. Localized redness where the procedure was performed for up to two weeks. This is the most often reported symptom when undergoing laser hair removal in the facial, underarm/armpit, bikini area.
  2. Patients with darker skin color may develop blisters or bumps, although they will subside with time. Doctors advise never to touch the bumps or blisters that have developed afterward because they may become infected or in the worst case scenario, could cause scarring or itching.
  3. Some patients may experience lightened skin where the laser was used while others may experience darkened skin.
  4. Beauty spots may change color once the laser hits the area that is being treated.
  5. Facial hair removal side effects can be of particular concern. Always discuss your cosmetic goals with your Doctor before undergoing any facial hair removal procedure.
Almost all of these side effects are seen in people with sensitive skin or in cases where an untrained person has applied the treatment. Patients must do the relevant research and take precautions before deciding to undergo laser hair removal treatment so that they can avoid any unnecessary side effects. Prospective patients should be diligent enough to get the necessary facts about laser treatment and also about the people involved in applying the treatment and handling the machines. As always, patients should make sure that the treatment center has a solid reputation.

Talk to your physician about any skin defects or problems that you may have in order to give them an idea of how to properly treat your skin. Make sure you mention any skin sensitivity issues.

Before the procedure, remember to take antiviral medications to avoid formations of fever blisters, bumps, etc, especially in the upper lip area. This may need to be prescribed by a doctor.

In the two months prior to your laser hair removal treatment, refrain from using photosynthesizing medicines that may aggravate any laser hair removal side effects that could occur after the treatments. This could include Accutane / Isotretinoin or Tetracycline.

With these things in mind, you can prevent any issues concerning laser hair removal treatments, get the most bang for your buck and ensure a positive and side-effect-free experience.
